Marauders Gear for Play-Off Run in 2004
After missing a post-season berth by a single game last spring, the 2004 edition of Jesuit baseball is poised to return to playoff form.
Pitching depth, a constant during the past decade, will again be the Marauders strong suit. The staff will boast nine arms, anchored by senior Matt Evans (19 strikeouts, 3 walks, 0.94 in ’03) and bolstered by fellow seniors Alex Bates (2.15), Nick Castellon, and Evan Krouse. A bevy of newcomers including Eric Deragisch, sophomores Andy Oros and Lars Anderson will lend stability through the rough-and-tumble Delta League season.
Mike Metzger (.434 average, .663 slugging, 11 doubles) the leading offensive returnee, should enjoy a stress-free spring, having signed early with UCLA. Metzger will be a mainstay in center field. Junior Joe Castilone, a steady performer throughout the summer, fall, and tryout period will flank Metzger in the outfield. Oros and Anderson both excelled offensively in the off-season and will figure prominently in the outfield and at first base when not called to the mound. The infield will have several interchangeable components with five athletes all capable of playing above average defense. Derek Sandoval and Brian Devlin return after productive sophomore campaigns with the varsity squad. Evans, Bates, and Deragisch will also contribute in addition to their pitching duties.
The return to “Suicide Saturday” and the Sac-Joaquin section playoffs will have many stiff tests along the way as the Delta League has five playoff-caliber programs this spring. In addition, the Marauders will open with three playoff participants during the Elk Grove-Woodland pre season tournament: St. Mary’s, Nevada Union, and Christian Brothers.
