Evaluation and Grading of Student Work

N.B. Every student begins the course with 100% = A

Classroom Participation
  1. Students are expected to attend class on a regular basis. More than 8 absences (excused or unexcused) could result in automatic failure of the course.
  2. Students are expected to participate constructively in classroom activities, experiments, and discussions.
  3. Students are expected to be prepared for class each day, with required textbook, assignments, and other necessary materials for instruction.
  4. Students will be subjectively evaluated according to their overall contribution to the learning environment, which includes attitude, behavior, courtesy, respect, work habits, and apparent effort.
Homework Assignments
  1. Students will be responsible for keeping up with the assigned readings in the text and with additional handouts.
  2. Students will be required to answer selected chapter review questions from the textbook.
  3. All assignments are due when I collect them.  Any assignment (unless absent) turned in late will be deducted 50% credit.
Quizzes, Tests and Exams
  1. Students will be given small quizzes that demonstrate comprehension of the course material.Students will be given objective tests on a regular basis. Tests will require that students retain, interpret, and apply the ideas and concepts within each unit.Students will be given essay questions on a regular basis. Answering these essays will require accurate information, defense of a point of view, logical reasoning, and clear and grammatically acceptable presentation.
  2. Students will be given a written Comprehensive Examination or a Final Paper at the end of the course.

Classroom Expectations and Policies

All are expected to make a positive contribution to the learning environment of the class through respectful and caring interaction consistent with Jesuit High School's Mission Statement. The following specific policies are a partial list of factors that contribute to creating such a learning environment.
    1. Please treat others with care and respect.
    2. Please cooperate during group activities.
    3. Please do not engage in private comments or conversations during large group discussion, lectures or written assignments in class.
    4. Please be in your seat with your classroom materials, ready to go, by the time the bell rings to commence class. Please wait for the teacher (not the bell) to dismiss class.
    5. All assignments are due when I collect them. Make-up quizzes and tests should be arranged in advance whenever possible. Otherwise, arrangements must be made within 24 hours of the student's return to school.
    6. Please exercise some stewardship over the resources and facilities of Jesuit High School by keeping the classroom clean and tidy. Please do not touch the computer, DVD/ VCR, or other equipment without expressed permission.
